Hawaii Volcanoes National Park

The next adventure with Andrea Minor is Friday, March 22 where we'll hike the Napau Crater Trail in Volcanoes National Park

Meet at the Mauna Ulu parking lot at 9:00 am.  This parking lot is down Chain of Craters Road, about 7 1/2 miles from the Kilauea Visitors Center.  Plenty of parking here and a restroom.

Do you have a National Park Pass??  Are you interested in carpooling?  (There is an admission fee to the park unless you have a park pass or are riding with someone who does.)

We will hike the Napau Crater Rim Trail from the parking lot to Puu Huluhulu, 2.5 miles RT (1.25 miles one way).  The hike is rated "Moderate" but is shorter than our last hike.  Most of it is fairly level, but there is a switchback climb at the end to the little hill called Puu Huluhulu (a 220 feet elevation gain).  There is a platform on top with some great views of rain forest and landscape from the 1969-1974 eruption.  We return to our cars the same way.

Some of this is hard surface i.e. an old road, some is across pahoehoe lava.  We'll pass some "lava trees" along the way, as well as some informational signs. I have one copy of the park guidebook with more details.

There is some forest cover on this trail, but much of it is over exposed lava.  We had a request for an earlier start to avoid the mid-day sun, hence the 9:00 am start.

My hiking book states "hiking boots recommended"; I've done it in trail runners, but please have sturdy shoes of some sort.

Bring: comfortable STURDY shoes, water, snacks, sunscreen, hat, and clothing for variable weather.

If there's interest, we'll have worked up an appetite and can go out for lunch after our hike.  Volcano House in the park, Thai Thai, or Lava Rock Cafe in Volcano Village.
